Nigeria’s National Theatre is set to host Circus in Motion, a contemporary circus festival in Lagos designed to promote innovation in the performing arts, nurture emerging talent and create opportunities for Nigerian artists to connect with audiences at home and abroad.
The festival, scheduled to hold from October 3 to 4, 2026, at the National Theatre in Lagos, seeks to establish a homegrown circus industry rooted in Nigerian culture, movement, music and storytelling.
According to the organisers, the initiative will provide a platform for young Nigerian acrobats, dancers, performers and storytellers to develop their skills and explore new opportunities in the creative industry.
With the theme, Reimagining Nigerian Performance for the Global Stage, Circus in Motion is designed to combine traditional Nigerian performance elements with contemporary circus techniques.
The organisers said the initiative was inspired by the abundance of creative talent in Nigeria, particularly among young people, but noted that the country lacked the structures and training opportunities needed to develop circus as a professional art form.
The festival will begin with a two-week intensive training camp, bringing together young Nigerian performers and international circus practitioners. Participants will receive training in acrobatics, theatre and stagecraft while working on original productions that reflect Nigerian identity and experiences.
The programme will also feature the creation and production of new circus performances, with plans to present the works at the festival and eventually take them to regional and international stages.
International organisations referenced in the festival’s programme include Fekat Circus of Ethiopia, Circus Baobab of Guinea, La Fabrique Circus of Côte d’Ivoire and XY of France. The organisers also highlighted potential collaborations with Swiss circus companies through Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council.
The opening production is expected to bring Nigerian and international performers together in a creative collaboration that reflects the festival’s focus on cultural exchange and artistic development.
Beyond performances, Circus in Motion will feature community outreach and youth engagement programmes designed to introduce contemporary circus to young Nigerians. The organisers hope to encourage more people to consider careers in performance, directing, technical production and other areas of the creative industry.
The initiative also aims to create new employment opportunities by developing a performance sector that can support artists, technical teams and creative professionals.
In its project proposal, the National Theatre identified Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage in dance and movement as one of the foundations for developing a distinct contemporary circus identity.
The organisers said the project would draw from Nigerian acrobatics, folklore, music and craft to create performances that tell African stories through movement and physical theatre.
The organisers are also seeking additional sponsors and partners to support the festival’s delivery.
The organisers described Circus in Motion as more than a festival, presenting it as an effort to establish a sustainable creative ecosystem for contemporary circus in Nigeria.
Through training, production, touring and international collaboration, the initiative seeks to create opportunities for Nigerian performers to develop their craft and connect with audiences beyond the country.
With the festival scheduled for October, Circus in Motion is expected to bring a different form of live entertainment to the National Theatre while opening discussions about the possibilities of contemporary circus in Nigeria’s growing creative industry.
