The long-anticipated Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rail line is poised to become operational this year, marking a significant milestone in the transportation landscape in Nigeria.
The Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) has announced that train services are scheduled to commence on this vital rail corridor, promising improved connectivity and efficient transportation between Port Harcourt and Maiduguri.
According to nigeriainfo.fm, Abraham Joseph, a manager of the construction company handling the line’s rehabilitation told Nigeria Info on Thursday that the firm has a 20 December deadline.
His comment will serve as a relief to people waiting to travel on the train from the South-southern and Southeastern parts of Nigeria to the North.
It is also a consolation to Port Harcourt residents who were discomforted when a major road in the Woji area was cordoned off on Thursday for the rail line’s rehabilitation.
Commuters and motorists said they were not informed about the work on the rail track.
Work on the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Eastern rail line was suspended in September 2022 by the then transportation minister, Muazu Sambo, due to insecurity and vandalism of the track.
