Milan at Design Week

Ogun State has taken its cultural story to the global stage, showcasing its heritage and creative ambitions in Milan Design Week 2026 with a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening cultural and economic ties between Nigeria and Italy.

At the Luciana Matalon Foundation in Milan, Ogun State representatives held talks with Nello Taietti, President of the foundation, as part of efforts to deepen collaboration and promote African creativity on the international stage.

The discussions, held on the sidelines of the globally renowned design week, centered on building a cultural bridge between Ogun State and Italy, with a shared commitment to amplifying African heritage, artistic excellence, and storytelling across borders.

Framed by the symbolic journey “From Abeokuta to Milan,” the engagement highlighted the global relevance of Olumo Rock, the iconic 137-metre granite formation in Abeokuta, which has long stood as a cultural and historical emblem of the Yoruba people.

Later, at Piazza Emilio Alfieri, Ogun State participated in The Rock That Remembers exhibition, staged under the Artnovation platform. The exhibition brought Olumo Rock into dialogue with global audiences, positioning African heritage within a broader international cultural narrative.

The showcase underscored the growing recognition of African stories and symbols within global creative spaces, as visitors engaged with interpretations of the landmark’s historical and cultural significance.

As part of the programme, Ogun State officials also took part in a fireside discussion themed “From Culture to Economy,” where they outlined strategies for harnessing culture as a driver of economic growth.

The session explored Nigeria’s expanding creative economy, Ogun State’s tourism potential, and the opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships between Africa and Italy.

Officials emphasized that culture remains not only a reflection of identity but also a powerful economic tool capable of driving innovation, investment, and cross-cultural collaboration.

The Milan outing forms part of broader efforts to reposition Ogun State as a key player in Africa’s cultural and creative industries, leveraging heritage assets like Olumo Rock to attract global attention, partnerships, and investment.

With its message resonating across Milan’s creative circles, Ogun State’s cultural diplomacy initiative signals a growing determination to transform tradition into opportunity — connecting culture, creativity, and commerce on the world stage.
