More than 200 high school students from across Johannesburg were introduced to career opportunities in aviation during the 7th Youth Development in Aviation outreach programme organized by the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) and South African Airways (SAA).

The event, held at the historic SAA Museum, formed part of activities surrounding the 14th Aviation Stakeholders Convention and the African Aviation Safety and Operations Summit.

Themed “African Youth Powering Tomorrow’s Aviation,” the programme sought to inspire young Africans to consider careers in aviation as the continent prepares for significant industry expansion over the coming decades.

AFRAA estimates that Africa will require more than 23,000 commercial pilots and 24,000 aircraft maintenance technicians within the next 20 years to support projected growth in air transport demand.

Students participated in aircraft tours, mentorship sessions, interactive demonstrations, and career presentations delivered by pilots, engineers, air traffic controllers, aviation instructors, and cabin crew professionals.

Speaking at the event, AFRAA Secretary General Abdérahmane Berthé emphasized the importance of investing in young talent to ensure the future sustainability of Africa’s aviation sector.

The outreach programme has been running since 2021 and is supported by aviation industry partners committed to developing the next generation of aviation professionals across the continent.
