Aviation safety experts, regulators, airline executives, and air navigation service providers have called for stronger collaboration and increased use of data analytics to improve aviation safety standards across Africa.
The call was made during the 3rd African Aviation Safety and Operations Summit organized by the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) in partnership with the Flight Safety Foundation in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The two-day summit focused on strengthening operational excellence through improved human performance management, fatigue mitigation, procedural compliance, predictive safety systems, and implementation of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety targets.
Participants reviewed Africa’s progress in meeting the Abuja Safety Targets and acknowledged that while improvements have been made, the continent continues to lag behind global safety implementation benchmarks.
The summit concluded with six key recommendations for aviation stakeholders, including the adoption of measurable safety indicators, bridging gaps between documented procedures and frontline operations, expanding industry collaboration, and leveraging data analytics to identify emerging risks before they develop into incidents.
AFRAA and the Flight Safety Foundation pledged continued support for airlines, regulators, airports, and air navigation service providers through technical assistance, safety programmes, and industry-wide cooperation initiatives aimed at enhancing aviation safety across the continent.
