Africa: Permanent Secretary Lagos Tourism Inspects Igando, Oregun Theatre Facilities

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening arts and culture infrastructure with an official inspection of two major theatre facilities in the state.

On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, led an inspection tour of the 405-seater Lagos Theatre, Igando and the ongoing reconstruction site of Lagos Theatre, Oregun.

The tour was aimed at assessing the condition of existing equipment, evaluating the overall operational capacity of the facilities, and monitoring progress on reconstruction works to ensure alignment with the state’s cultural development objectives. Mrs. Oyekan-Ismaila was accompanied by key officials of the ministry, including the Director of Facility Management, Mr. Abimbola Ogunshote; Deputy Director, Audit Unit, Mrs. Adenike Adebajo; Assistant Director, Tourism, Miss Idowu Amusan; and Senior Administration and Human Resource Officers, Mrs. Oluwabunmi Ogunjobi and Miss Yetunde Baruwa.

At the Lagos Theatre, Oregun reconstruction site, the Project Architect, Mr. Tunde Joseph, guided the inspection team through the facility, providing a detailed briefing on the scope, quality and pace of the ongoing construction works. At the Lagos Theatre, Igando, the Facility Manager, Mr. Segun Alawode, presented an overview of the state of existing equipment and infrastructure. He highlighted areas requiring upgrades, noting that the proposed improvements form part of the Lagos State Government’s strategic investments to enhance service delivery and audience experience.

The inspection team carried out a comprehensive evaluation of both theatres, examining structural integrity, technical equipment and operational readiness, with a focus on ensuring optimal functionality and safety standards.

The revitalisation of the Igando theatre and the reconstruction of the Oregun facility are expected to significantly boost the state’s creative economy, provide modern performance spaces for artists and reinforce Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s leading hub for arts, culture and entertainment.
