The football circle in South Africa have been abuzz since the news came out that Ghana will battle Nigeria for a spot at the next FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and they have taken to social media to troll their Ghanaian counterparts.

The reason is not far-fetched.

According to Wakanda African News, Ghana was the reason why South Africa failed to qualify for both African Cup of Nations and the world cup.

The latter which came with a painful loss was the main trigger for the friendly rivalry between the two countries, generating many leads online.

It is normal to see a post, just one imoji on a South African page attracting thousands of comments, likes and shares.

Typically, you will see two sets of people. Ghanaians who will be defending their potentials with statistics and South Africans who post savage comments and memes in response.

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana team visited Ghana somewhere in November 2021 for the world Cup qualification match.

During the game, a very controversial penalty was taken by the official against South Africa, resulting in the only goal which separated the two sides at the end of the day.

Football experts say the penalty was a wrong call from the referee. The South African Football Association petitioned FIFA for a replay; however, the appeal was dismissed with Ghana’s victory sustained.

Since that occurrence, the online trolling started between the two countries.

Mostly, the trolls are triggered from the South African side.

Since they are not participating in the AFCON, they take all the time to mock the abysmal performance of Ghana which saw their withdrawal from the tournament.

With a world cup play off draw with Nigeria, which is proving to have a very tough team at the moment, Ghana may be on its way of falling in South Africa’s trolling traps again.

In a related development, Nigerians took to Twitter to troll Ghana after their ouster from the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Black Stars lost their final group match to new comers Comoros, with skipper Andre Ayew given a red-card.
