According to a research carried out by Privacy protection company Surfshark.com, Nigeria ranked 85th and at the bottom of the analysis among countries with the slowest and least affordable internet in the world.

According to africa.businessinsider.com, the Digital Quality of Life index shows that world regions where people pay the most for mobile and fixed broadband internet services also contend with the slowest internet speed and lowest connection stability.

For instance, people living in Africa have to work almost 11 hours a month to pay for even the cheapest broadband package. In Nigeria, it is almost 34 hours. Whereas, on a global average, individuals work three hours and 48 minutes a month to pay for even the cheapest broadband package.

The findings also suggest that countries with the least affordable internet tend to be countries with the slowest internet. Based on the index figures, Nigeria is at the bottom of the internet affordability pillar as the country with the least affordable internet out of the 85 countries assessed.

The research further reveals that Africa’s average broadband internet speed is 4.85 Mbps, compared to the global average speed of 15.94 Mbps. Similarly, the mobile connection speed in Africa is 20.55 Mbps, compared to the global average speed of 33.53 Mbps.

The overall affordability is measured by combining the affordability of the cheapest mobile and broadband plans available in a country. The research concludes that the affordability of internet connections directly impacts its accessibility. Thus A less affordable internet has a negative effect on the overall digital wellbeing of the citizens of that country.
