The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the groundbreaking of two new temples.

“As we dedicate this site and begin construction of the Lagos Nigeria Temple, we encourage our members to earnestly prepare to receive ordinances and make covenants with the Lord that will bring power and blessings, both to the living and to our ancestors,” said the First Presidency of the Church.

Also announced today, the groundbreaking for the Benin City Nigeria Temple. It will take place Saturday, 24 May, 2025. Elder Adeyinka A. Ojediran, First Counselor in the Africa West Area Presidency, will preside at the event. Attendance at the site will be by invitation only.

“As we dedicate this site and begin construction of the Benin City Nigeria Temple, we encourage our members to earnestly prepare to receive ordinances and make covenants with the Lord that will bring power and blessings, both to the living and to our ancestors,” reiterated the First Presidency of the Church.

Latter-day Saint temples differ from the Church’s meetinghouses or chapels where members meet for Sunday worship services. Temples are considered “houses of the Lord,” where Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed through marriage, baptism and other ordinances that unite families for eternity. In the temple, Church members learn more about the purpose of life and strengthen their commitment to serve Jesus Christ and those around them.
