Africa: Sierra Leone appoints a female university lecturer as Tourism Minister

The president of Sierra Leone Julius Maada has appointed a female Minister of Tourism and cultural affairs – Mrs. Memunatu B. Pratt. This was during the 27 ministerial appointments on the 2nd of May 2018, in which four women were appointed including the minister of tourism and cultural affairs.

Sierra Leone known for its fantastic white beaches, national parks, mangrove swamps, sandy beaches and the Loma Mountains in the north is one of the best destinations in Africa.

Sierra Leone as one of the top countries in Africa where tourism is growing fastest. A recent publication by Atqnews.com stated that Turkish airline made Freetown the country’s capital its 52nd destination in Africa with new flights.

The current minister Mrs. Memunatu B. Pratt succeeded a male minister Sidi Yahya Tunis.

According to Nan.ng, Women advocates have criticised the new government for appointing only four women into the 27-man full cabinet positions . One of the women appointed is Nabeela Tunis, wife of the Parliamentary Leader of the governing SLPP party.

The head of the 50/50 gender parity group, Dr Fatu Taqi said. “While we congratulate the women, we are a little bit disappointed that only four of the 27 full cabinet positions went to women”.

She urged the president to put on “the gender lens” in appointing people to ambassadorial and Parastatal positions.
