The ancient craft of Akwete weaving has received a major boost following the announcement of a ₦2 billion intervention by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, aimed at reviving and expanding the production of the iconic handwoven fabric in Abia State.
The initiative is expected to support local weavers, preserve the cultural heritage of Akwete textile production and create new economic opportunities for communities involved in the centuries-old craft.
The surprise announcement came during her visit to Aba, where she celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Akwete, a centuries-old weaving tradition native to Ukwa East Local Government Area.
Declaring that the time had come for Akwete fabric to take its rightful place on the national stage, the First Lady said the intervention would transform the weaving industry, create jobs, empower local women, and preserve the ancient craft for generations to come.
“I heard your cry,” she told the women of Akwete. “It is time to take Akwete fabric to the national stage. On my part, I am donating ₦2 billion for this project.”
Mrs. Tinubu described the handwoven fabric as a symbol of identity, culture, and history, warning that abandoning traditional values would disconnect future generations from their roots.
She praised the women who have kept the craft alive through decades of dedication, urging young Nigerians to embrace their cultural heritage and proudly wear African attire.
In a moment that drew cheers from the audience, the First Lady pledged that if President Bola Tinubu secures a second term in 2027, she would wear an Akwete-made wrapper and buba at the presidential inauguration.
Governor Alex Otti welcomed the donation, describing it as a game-changing intervention that would significantly boost Akwete fabric production and strengthen Abia’s creative economy.
