The Abia State Government has announced the commencement of reconstruction works at the Ojukwu Bunker and the National War Museum in Umuahia as part of efforts to transform the historic sites into world-class tourism destinations.
The government said the project is aimed at preserving the historical significance of the facilities while repositioning them as major cultural and heritage attractions capable of drawing both local and international visitors.
According to the state government, the redevelopment initiative will upgrade infrastructure at the sites and improve the overall visitor experience, while also preserving important memories associated with Nigeria’s civil war history.
The Ojukwu Bunker, regarded as one of the most symbolic relics of the Nigerian Civil War, served as a strategic underground shelter during the Biafran era. The National War Museum in Umuahia also houses historical military collections, artifacts, and war memorabilia that reflect key moments in Nigeria’s history.
The reconstruction project forms part of broader plans by the Abia State Government to promote tourism, preserve cultural heritage, and stimulate economic activities through the development of historic destinations.
The government added that upon completion, the sites are expected to serve as educational and tourism hubs, attracting researchers, historians, students, and tourists interested in Nigeria’s history and cultural heritage.
The move has been welcomed by tourism stakeholders and historians, who believe the revitalisation of the Ojukwu Bunker and National War Museum could significantly boost heritage tourism in Abia State and position Umuahia as an important historical tourism destination in Nigeria.
