The National Council on Privatisation chaired by Vice President Namadi Sambo has approved a new draft policy for the reform of national parks in the country, the Bureau of Public Enterprises has said. Consequently, the council has directed the Ministry of Environment to immediately present all the necessary legal and regulatory documents for the enactment of a National Parks Bill in the country to the Federal Executive Council for approval. The Head of Public Communications, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Mr. Alex Okoh, disclosed this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday.
Okoh listed the required documents to be submitted to the FEC to include the draft policy on Nigeria national parks, draft National Park Service Bill and draft implementation framework for the national park service sector. According to him, the NCP at its meeting noted that after the approval by the FEC, the draft bill would be transmitted to the National Assembly for enactment into law. The NCP had at its 55th meeting held on September 22, 2008 approved the constitution of the National Parks’ Steering Committee under the chairmanship of the Minister of Environment with members drawn from relevant government agencies and state governments.
Further to that, the council at its fifth meeting held on July 11, 2013 approved the constitution of a project advisory team to review and propose a policy, legal and regulatory framework for the reform of the tourism sector and partial commercialisation of the national parks. The PAT is a technical body drawn from the BPE; government Ministries, Departments and Agencies and other stakeholders to provide inputs to the NCP steering committee in proposing the policy, legal and regulatory framework for the reform of the tourism sector and partial commercialisation of the national parks.
