Tourism: Bush meat for sale as South African game reserve enters survival mode during COVID-19 lockdown

The novel Coronavirus took the world unawares and as it grew into a global pandemic, countries were forced to institute lockdown measures to curb the spread. Lockdowns meant, no travel.

No travel meant no tourists – and no tourists means no tourism.

To survive, various companies in the industry have had to adapt their business model. For instance, some hotels have turned to their kitchen and restaurants, by offering home delivery meals; while others have taking advantage of their laundry facilities.

In South Africa, the luxury game lodges are empty and safari vehicles gather dust, due to borders closure and no flights.

However, for Somkhanda, a community-owned game reserve, selling game meat has thrown it a lifeline as Africa’s multibillion-dollar safari industry unravels.

The reserve normally gives away or sells at low cost the meat from grazers such as impala and nyala, a spiral-horned antelope, that it culls each year to manage stocks, depending on the weather and available grassland.

Now, faced with a loss of up to 90 per cent of its revenue, it is more actively marketing the meat – often seen as a delicacy and bought by restaurants and foreign tourists – to bring in 50,000 rand (US$2,900) to 100,000 rand per month, according to the reserve’s management.

“The tourism industry has collapsed.

There has been no one coming to visit,” said Roelie Kloppers, chief executive at the Wildlands, which co-manages the reserve in the heart of northern Zululand. “Instead of culling and just giving that meat away [ …] we tried to market it,” said Kloppers, adding: “We would rather have the doors open.”

Before the pandemic, local and international tourists would watch lions and wild dogs – as well as the impala and nyala – on guided bush walks and game drives on the 12,000-hectare reserve.

Rising costs from safety procedures such as hand sanitiser stations, temperature checks and protective equipment for staff have added to the reserve’s burden since South Africa imposed its lockdown at the end of March.

Eight jobs have been cut.

The meat is sold online through a partnership with KZN Game Meat, at farmers’ markets and at some Pick n Pay stores. Pick n Pay is South Africa’s second largest supermarket chain.

“Bills are pilling up … so we decided to cull the animals that breed in numbers so we can sell the meat to supplement income during this time,” said the leader of the Emvokweni Community Trust, which owns the reserve, Fana Gumbi.

The African Union estimates that African countries have lost almost US$55 billion in travel and tourism revenues in just three months due to the pandemic.

“Through the meat sales market we were able to keep the ship afloat,” reserve manager Meiring Prinsloo said.
