Cape Town – Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) saw a 14.4% increase in African air arrivals, and a 5,6% growth in overseas arrivals during 2015, despite the overall tourism numbers for South Africa in 2015 dropping a whopping 6.8%.
According to SA verification service Grant Thornton, South Africa experienced its biggest loss of tourism from African tourists in 2015, where a decline of 7.3% was recorded, compared to 9% growth recorded during 2014.
Despite this decline in overall visitors from Africa to the country, Cape Town International Airport saw a 14.4% increase in African air arrivals.
Grant Thornton’s advisory director Lee-Anne Bac attributes this remarkable growth to the introduction of new airlines flying directly to CTIA.
Ethiopian Airlines now boasts six return flights per week from Addis Ababa to Cape Town direct, while Turkish Airlines also launched direct flights between Cape Town and Istanbul in October last year.
