Ethiopian Airlines has reaffirmed its commitment to boosting Nigeria’s tourism and travel sector, expressing strong interest in partnering with local festivals and cultural events across the country.
The announcement came from Firiehiwot Mekonnen, Area Manager of Ethiopian Airlines in Nigeria, during the official launch of the airline’s second daily flight into Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA).
Speaking at the ceremony, Mekonnen highlighted the airline’s willingness to support both inbound and outbound tourism, citing the growing appeal of Nigerian festivals such as Detty December, Carnival Calabar, Ojude Oba, and the Durbar Festival.
“Ethiopian Airlines is willing and able to partner and support travel and tourism in Nigeria,” she said. “In the coming months, we will unveil plans to actively engage with Nigeria’s vibrant cultural scene.”
She extended appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, under the leadership of Barrister Festus Keyamo, SAN, for facilitating the airline’s operations and for creating an enabling environment for aviation growth.
Mekonnen also thanked the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), travel agencies, media, and other stakeholders, describing them as vital partners in the airline’s long-standing success in Nigeria.
The new daily frequency, which launched with a full passenger load, marks a significant expansion of Ethiopian Airlines’ operations in the country and is expected to enhance connectivity and boost both business and leisure travel between Nigeria and the rest of the world.
“To our most esteemed passengers—without your patronage, we would not be here. We deeply appreciate your continued support and assure you of our commitment to serve even better,” Mekonnen added.
She also praised the Lagos-based Ethiopian Airlines team for their dedication and hard work in making the second daily flight a reality.
The move is seen as a positive signal of the airline’s confidence in Nigeria’s aviation and tourism potential, and a strategic step to deepen regional ties through increased air access.
