Two African cities have earned places among the world’s 20 best nightlife destinations for 2026, with Johannesburg, South Africa, ranking seventh globally and Accra, Ghana, coming in at 18th, according to a ranking by Time Out reported by Business Insider Africa.
Johannesburg emerged as Africa’s highest-ranked city, recognised for its dynamic and diverse nightlife, spanning clubs, pubs, cocktail bars and music scenes ranging from house and techno to Afro-house, gqom and drum and bass. The city also scored strongly for affordability and its sense of community, with 66% of surveyed residents rating nightlife as affordable and 80% saying it was easy to find connection and community.

Accra ranked 18th globally, with its established nightlife districts, expanding selection of bars and clubs, live-music venues and alternative entertainment spaces contributing to its appeal. Osu remains one of the Ghanaian capital’s major nightlife hubs, while East Legon continues to develop as an upscale entertainment district. Accra also received strong ratings for affordability and community, with 62% of residents describing nightlife as affordable and 75% saying it was easy to find community. The city’s nightlife extends beyond Afrobeats to include electronic music, alté, R&B and other emerging music cultures.
The 2026 ranking was based on responses from more than 24,000 locals, combined with assessments from Time Out editors, culture experts and nightlife specialists. Factors included nightlife quality and affordability, safety, diversity, community, excitement and how welcoming each city is. Globally, Bangkok took the top spot, followed by Berlin and Melbourne. The recognition of Johannesburg and Accra highlights the growing importance of night-time economies, entertainment, music and urban culture in shaping African cities as tourism and lifestyle destinations.
