King Okatakyie Nana Amin 1 of Ghana has called on African countries, to work together to strengthen inter-African tourism.
Speaking at the 20th Akwaaba Travel Market, West Africa’s biggest travel expo, held at the Eko Hotels and Suits Lagos, the monarch emphasized the importance of collaboration among tourism organizations across the continent to unlock Africa’s vast potential as a global travel destination.
His message set the tone for the event, highlighting the need for unity to drive sustainable tourism growth.
He said, although Akwaaba happens to be a Ghanaian word, the event is not just a celebration of a milestone but a testament to Africa’s vibrant culture, resilient spirit, and its ever-growing influence in the global tourism scene.
He urged all present to take advantage of connecting and networking.
For such a person to bring Africa together, it is amazing. It’s all about networking and connecting. And I’m so proud to be part of it today, celebrating with this group of brothers here at the 20th Akwaaba Market”.

Also, speaking at the event, the organizer, African Travel Market, Ambassador Ikechi Uko highlighted the growing impact of tourism on the African continent that catches global attention.
Reflecting on the journey that began two decades ago, Uko explained the motivation behind creating the largest travel market in West Africa.
“I wanted to create a platform where Africa could be marketed not just to the world, but within the continent itself,” Uko said. “It made no sense to me that we had to travel to London to showcase Africa. Why not do it right here on our soil? That’s how the idea for Akwaaba was born.”

Uko credited industry stakeholders like the management of Eko Hotels and the former General Manager of British Airways for their early support, which helped transform his vision into reality.
He expressed his joy at seeing the continued growth of the event over the years, despite challenges, adding, “Nigeria is ripe for tourism. This platform has been instrumental in linking the Nigerian travel business to the global market.”
The event also featured energetic presentation from the Calabar dance troupe, where the performers gave an appetizer of cultural displays yet to be seen at the Biggest Street Party in Africa, Carnival Calabar.
This year’s exhibition also features special pavilions focusing on eco-tourism, luxury travel, and innovations in the digital landscape, reflecting the evolving demands of modern travellers.
The atmosphere was electric, as exhibitors, including Kenya Tourism Board, Memorial Hospitals Group from Turkey, Royal Senchi Hotels from Ghana, MTN Nigeria, Ekiti State, Cinderella Travels and Tours, Skyway Aviation Handling Company PLC, The Gambia Tourism, Eko Hotels and Suites, Ethiopian Airlines, and Ibom Air, set up their booths, Costa Cruises, Alisa Hotel, African Regent Hotel, Hotel2Fervier, Royal Air Maroc, among others.
