In recognition of the 2025 World Culture Day and International Museum Day, the Imo State Government, through its Ministry of Tourism, Hospitality and Culture, is inviting the public to a joint celebration aimed at promoting cultural identity and heritage preservation.

The event, scheduled for Thursday, May 29, at the Imo State Arts and Culture Centre in Owerri, will spotlight the importance of Igbo culture and the role of museums in safeguarding historical legacy for future generations.

According to the Chief Information Officer and Head Public Relations, Ministry of Tourism Hospitality and culture, Awaeze V.C (Mrs), the theme of this year’s World Culture Day is: “Embrace the Journey,  Shape our Future “.

She said it reflects the central message in the 2025 culture day celebration which is; “cultural day for dialogue and development, celebrating cultures and building peace”.

Culture is defined as the shared or common values and practices of a particular society.  It is an umbrella term that encompasses a vast range of issues such as tradition, language, religion, norms, values, music, arts, food,  system of governance, etc

Culture helps us understand the reasons behind people’s behaviour.  Through culture,  people and groups define themselves, comform to society’s shared values and contribute to society.

There are various dimensions of culture all over the world such as Western Culture, Eastern Culture, Latin Culture and African Culture. Each of these culture has its unique attribute and its good and bad. For instance,  the Western Culture is hinged on democracy and human rights but issues of sexuality are free and open. In the Eastern and Latin Cultures that share much in common with African Culture,  the family including extended family is the important social unit and individuals choose family wellbeing over the needs of individual persons.

We Imo people belong to a subset of the African Culture called Igbo culture.

As we celebrate the 2025 World Culture Day, the importance of museums in the preservation of our cultural heritage and values should not be ignored. A museum is an institution that serves the society by researching,  collecting, preserving and exhibiting both tangible and intangible heritage.  It is a place dedicated to the study and display of objects of historical, artistic or scientific interests.

Why is it important to celebrate one’s culture and showcase them in a museum?, It encourages young people to embrace the customs,  traditions,  languages and art forms that make each culture unique.

We at the Ministry of Tourism, Hospitality and Culture with Barrister Jerry Egemba as the Honorable Commissioner and TUC  Nwokonkwo as Permanent Secretary cordially invite all stakeholders,  lovers of  culture and the general public to the 2025 World Culture Day and international Museum Day joint celebrations. taking place on  Thursday, Eke,May 29, 2025 at
