The International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA) and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF)  have announced to jointly hold the IFATCA/ITF, Training Programme on Industrial Relations and Negotiation Skills for Air Traffic Controllers in the country.

According to a press release jointly signed by both associations, the training is scheduled to take place from 23-27 March 2026 at the NCAA Training Hall, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria.

Across Africa and the Middle East, as well as globally, the aviation sector continues to face evolving labour relations challenges arising from operational pressures, workforce dynamics, and the increasing complexity of modern air navigation services. In such an environment, it is essential that aviation professionals and their organisations are equipped with the skills and frameworks necessary to engage constructively with management and stakeholders.

This joint initiative by IFATCA and ITF reflects a shared commitment to strengthening social dialogue, structured engagement, and responsible labour relations within the aviation sector. The programme is designed to equip air traffic controllers and aviation professionals with practical

management, and collaborative problem-solving within safety-critical environments.

Both organisations strongly emphasise that constructive social dialogue remains the most effective and sustainable approach to resolving professional and workplace concerns. While industrial action exists within the broader framework of labour rights, it should always be regarded as a measure of last resort, particularly within safety-sensitive sectors such as aviation where continuity, safety, and public confidence are paramount.

Through this training programme, participants will benefit from interactive sessions, real-life case studies, and the experience of international experts, enabling them to develop practical tools that

support mutual understanding, professional advocacy, and cooperative engagement between aviation professionals and management.

IFATCA and ITF remain firmly committed to promoting dialogue-based solutions, strengthening institutional capacity, and fostering harmonious labour relations across the aviation industry. By

empowering professionals with negotiation and engagement skills, the programme seeks to contribute to stable, resilient, and safe aviation systems throughout the region and beyond.

Both organisations look forward to welcoming participants and partners to Lagos for this important capacity-building initiative.
