Africa: Lagos Tourism Commissioner Leads Joint Inspection of J. Randle Centre to Enhance Museum Standards

The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, led a multi-agency inspection of the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History as part of efforts to strengthen the facility’s preservation standards and align its operations with global museum best practices.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, the Director of the Centre, Mr. Qudus Onikeku, and other directors from the ministry, the team toured the facility alongside officials from the Ministry of Works, consultants and technical experts involved in the project. The delegation included the Head of Facility Management, Mr. Abimbola Ogunshote; Head of Legal, Mrs. Eunice Ibitola; Head of Audit, represented by Mr. Sunday Lucas; Chief Architect, Miss Mojisla Cole; and the SI.SA consultant team led by Principal Architect, Mr. Seun Oduwole.

The joint inspection focused on assessing the current state of the centre’s infrastructure, identifying areas that require improvement, and putting in place measures to protect the facility in accordance with international standards for museums and heritage institutions.

Officials noted that the exercise forms part of the state government’s commitment to ensuring that the J. Randle Centre remains a world-class cultural hub dedicated to preserving and promoting Yoruba history, art and heritage for both local and international visitors.
