Malawian authorities have arrested the pilot of a private aircraft after it allegedly landed at Kamuzu International Airport without complying with mandatory aviation procedures, prompting the seizure of the aircraft and an official investigation into the incident.
According to airport authorities, the aircraft, registration number N137ZM, arrived from Lanseria Airport in South Africa, a major hub for private and charter flights near Johannesburg. According to Nyasa Times, upon landing, officials detained the pilot and impounded the aircraft over what they described as a failure to follow established entry and aviation clearance procedures.

Airport spokesperson Dorrah Chathyoka confirmed the arrest, saying the aircraft had not complied with the required operational protocols before entering Malawian airspace and landing at the airport. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the pilot’s identity or nationality.
The incident has triggered investigations involving aviation and security agencies to determine the circumstances surrounding the flight, including whether all regulatory, customs and immigration requirements were met before the aircraft entered the country. Officials have not indicated how long the aircraft will remain in government custody, but said further action will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation and any breaches of Malawi’s civil aviation regulations that may be established.
