Nigeria’s Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade-John, has emphasized the critical role of the country’s youth in driving its tourism sector to global prominence.
Speaking at the 20th Akwaaba African Travel Market, she highlighted that 65% of domestic trips in 2023 were made by travelers aged 18-35, reflecting a vibrant, youthful influence.
With tourism startups led by youth growing by 150% in three years and social media travel engagement surging by 300% since 2021, Ade-John stressed the immense potential of Nigeria’s young population in reshaping the global tourism landscape.
According her, 80% of the country’s tourism workforce is under 40, bringing innovation and digital savvy to the sector.

She stated that “These young Nigerians are not just travellers; they are storytellers, digital nomads, and entrepreneurs reshaping our tourism landscape.”
“The Federal Ministry of Tourism has a huge role to play in leading this mission.”
Ade-John further stated the government achieving this goal y implementing a thorough National Tourism Policy and Tourism Development MasterPlan; and reactivating key structures like the Presidential Council on Tourism, chaired by Mr. President himself.
The added that the ministry will be leveraging technology to develop a comprehensive tourism database, website, mobile app, and virtual tours.
“We are partnering with private sector players like Cavista Holdings as well as tech-savvy youth to drive this digital revolution.”
She said the government will be collaborating with states to provide counterpart investments that enhance attractions like Obudu Mountain Resort and Yankari Game Reserve. Collaborating with the Ministry of Education to include History and Tourism in the curriculum from primary school level.
“Our goal is to train young Nigerians, women and indigenes in tourism, hospitality and entrepreneurship skills.”
