A Nigerian traveller has shared an experience of facing intense scrutiny and alleged intimidation by immigration officials while travelling to Mauritius through Dubai, raising concerns about the treatment of Nigerian passport holders abroad despite having valid travel documents.
According to the traveller on Instagram, all Nigerians on the flight were separated for intensive questioning, described as being treated “like ex‑convicts or thieves,” and some were ultimately deported, raising concerns about discriminatory treatment of citizens traveling within Africa.
The incident reportedly began before departure, where the traveller alleged that immigration officers demanded unofficial payments for stamping travel documents, causing delays and almost leading to a missed flight.
The experience highlights ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian citizens traveling abroad, including alleged extortion, inconsistent treatment, and difficulties accessing other African countries even when in full compliance with visa and entry requirements.
The traveller also pointed out the contrast with foreigners entering Nigeria, claiming that individuals with or without proper documents are often allowed free movement, intensifying frustrations over perceived unequal treatment.
Travel rights advocates are calling for stronger protections and accountability for Nigerian citizens to ensure fair, safe, and dignified treatment when crossing borders.
