The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos has been named as the 5th busiest airport in Africa.
The airport comes fifth after the Oliver Tambo International Airport Johannesburg (South- Africa) which is the busiest and followed by the Cairo International Airport (Egypt), the Cape Town International Airport (South-Africa) and the Mohammed V International Airport, Casablanca, (Morocco). This is contained in a release by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) which rates the Lagos airport as one of the fastest growing in Africa and one projected to experience huge traffic growth following the construction of a new terminal expected to be operational later this year.
The rating is coming barely after the conclusion of the Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) of Nigerian aviation which earned the airports authority accolade from the Airport Council International (ACI) Director-General, Angela Gittens.
Commenting on the rating, FAAN’s General Manager, Corporate Communications, Yakubu Dati said before the end of this year, the authority would be processing over 20 million passengers annually from Lagos. He said the existing 15 million passengers processed annually would be boosted when the new international terminal with the capacity for another 15 million passengers is completed and operational.
