Dr. Oluwasegun Musa, an expert in cargo export and transport, has voiced significant concerns over the challenges facing Nigeria’s air cargo export industry.
Speaking in Lagos in an interview with newsbulletinng.com, Dr. Musa pointed out key obstacles that are impeding the growth and development of this crucial sector, calling for immediate reforms to address the issues.
He emphasized the need for a renewed commitment and a comprehensive overhaul of the existing infrastructure and processes.
He criticized the current state of warehouses, operated by NAHCO and SAHCO, which often lack the necessary facilities to handle perishable goods and ensure their safe transportation.
“Until we invest in modern, well-equipped warehouses, especially for perishables, we will continue to lose valuable exports,” he stated.
Packaging and labeling were also identified as major challenges, stressing the importance of proper packaging to meet international standards and prevent damage during transit.
He called for increased training and awareness among exporters on packaging techniques and labeling requirements.
The expert also highlighted the issue of multiple government agencies involved in cargo inspection, leading to delays and inefficiencies.
He advocated a streamlined process with a single responsible agency to expedite clearance procedures.
Infrastructure, particularly at airports, was another area of concern. Dr. Musa criticized the outdated and inadequate facilities, which hinder efficient cargo handling and storage.
He urged the government to invest in modernizing airports and providing adequate infrastructure to support the growing export industry.
To boost air cargo exports, Dr. Musa proposed several solutions, including the establishment of specialized ground handling companies, the creation of cargo consolidation centers, and a review of government charges and levies.
“When you are doing your packaging go to NAHCO, SAHCO export you see how clumsy how untidy the environment is and we told government, that look some of us want to invest in warehousing give us space so that we can have specialized warehousing, NAHCO and SAHCO cannot be doing all kind of cargo”.
“We need registered consolidators. They will buy space in the aircraft, market it, everybody that has cargo going to that destination, they will take it to them and consolidate it. It will take a week or two, they ship it at once. The higher the volume, the lower the price of freight”.
He also emphasized the importance of implementing a paperless system for customs clearance to reduce processing time and improve efficiency.
“Nigeria has immense potential in air cargo exports, but we need to address the challenges hindering its growth”.
“By implementing these reforms and investing in the necessary infrastructure, we can create a more conducive environment for exporters and position Nigeria as a leading player in the global air cargo market.”
