Kano State has announced its readiness to collaborate with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to boost the export of perishable agricultural products via air cargo, aiming to strengthen the state’s agricultural value chain and global trade connections.
According to dailytrust.com, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf expressed his commitment to the initiative, which aims to reduce post-harvest losses by improving the transportation of farm produce to neighbouring states, African countries, and global markets.
Governor Yusuf spoke when he hosted a delegation of cargo management services from FAAN at the Government House in Kano on Thursday.
He said the initiative would also reduce security risks associated with road transport of agricultural products.
FAAN’s General Manager, Mrs Alao Mamman Rekiya, said the collaboration would encourage farmers to improve production quality while making Kano a more economically viable hub.
The project is set to commence in the first quarter of 2025, and an inter-agency committee will be established to oversee its development.
Also, the RGM/Airport Manager of Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport(MAKIA), Alh A.J Danmusa alongside the Head of Cargo services, MAKIA, Haj Hasiya Alabura Muhammed, hosted the Director of Cargo Services of FAAN, Mr Lekan Thomas, G.M Cargo Services Mrs Rekiya Mamman Alao.
The Director, was accompanied by Avia Cargo team headed by Mr Ikechi Uko and Mr Alex Nwuba who paid a courtesy visit to Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, Kano command, Dawanau Market Kano, Kano state Chamber of Commerce and Government house kano state. The team also met with the Cargo agents of MAKIA.
The essence of the visit is to seek areas of collaboration and synergy with stakeholders to advance the new mode of transporting agro-products to neighboring countries by Air-Cargo and other parts of the world, which will drastically reduce the risk of movement of goods through road transport.
