Africa’s largest carrier, Ethiopian airlines is hoping that its newly constructed terminal at its hub in Addis Ababa will cement its position as the largest gateway Africa after over taking Dubai.

According to airportsinternational.keypublishing.com, Addis Ababa Bole International Airport overtook Dubai to become the largest gateway to Africa last year. Now, it hopes a brand-new passenger terminal will ensure it retains the title while it strives to offer an innovative passenger experience.

Ethiopian Airlines Group has completed a new passenger terminal at its hub, Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. The airline is the largest and fastest-growing airline in Africa and has become one of the continent’s leading carriers.

Construction of its new terminal has now ended, with the resulting space being capable of accommodating 22 million passengers annually. Along with its capacity, it will be offering travellers many spacious, innovative and luxurious amenities.

Tewolde GebreMariam, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, commented: “I am very pleased to witness the realisation of a brand-new terminal at our hub.

While Addis Ababa Bole has overtaken Dubai to become the largest gateway to Africa last year, the new terminal will play a key role in cementing that position. What makes the new terminal unique is that it’s the first in the world to be completed after COVID-19. It was designed, not re-purposed, with biosafety and security in mind. I’m sure our esteemed customers will highly appreciate that.”

The carrier previously announced its Vision 2025, of which one of the core pillars was aviation infrastructure expansion. The airline has managed to achieve its goal of expanding on airport facilities despite the enormous impact of the pandemic. The airport hopes to make the experience for both staff and customers contactless to support its biosafety and security focus.

The new terminal will use digitally equipped amenities to bring the passenger experience into the twenty-first century. The terminal comprises a large check-in hall complete with 60 counters, as well as all the relevant security and boarding essentials. Additionally, it offers many amenities including shopping malls, entertainment areas, restaurants and a 5000-square-metre lounge.
