The Tanzanian government is intensifying its efforts to revive Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), with continued investments in acquiring new aircraft, according to Minister for Transport Professor Makame Mbarawa on May 15, 2025.
According to dailynews, presenting his ministry’s 2025/26 budget estimates in Parliament, Prof Mbarawa said the strategic investments have significantly expanded ATCL’s commercial reach, both locally and internationally.
He revealed that since President Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed office, the government has procured seven new aircraft, bringing the total number of new planes in ATCL’s fleet to 15, including one dedicated cargo aircraft.
Prof Mbarawa said the newly acquired aircraft have enabled the airline to expand its services to 27 destinations, up from 23 destinations served in March 2021.
He noted that the purchases are part of the broader plan to strengthen ATCL’s competitiveness and enhance Tanzania’s air transport network.
“The government’s continued investment in ATCL reflects its commitment to improving transport services and supporting the airline’s commercial expansion,” he told lawmakers.
The minister added that the expanded network is expected to boost tourism, facilitate trade, and contribute to economic growth through improved connectivity.
