A serious fire broke out this morning at the headquarters of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), which crippled activities at the Murtala Muhammed Airport.

The massive fire caused vehicular traffic along the Ikeja-Agege Motorway. The fire which started at about 8.30am razed down the audit, engineering, commercial and corporate communications departments and the reception hall.

The fire was put out by the collective efforts of Lagos state and FAAN firefighters. According to eye witnesses, the fire may have been caused by a power surge.

Some of the FAAN staff who asked to be anonymous said that an audit of staff verification was on going and some of the staff certificates have been burnt in the inferno. Some people who sustained minor injuries were treated by a team of medical personnel on ground. In a statement, spokesman for FAAN, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu said, “the fire which affected some offices, is being investigated right now to find out the cause of the outbreak.

The fire department, in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire Department and other security agencies however responded swiftly by curtailing the spread of the fire, as normalcy is being restored already.

The Authority will like to assure travelers, airport users and the general public that the incident did not affect operations at any airport in any way as normal operations continue unhindered”.
