An aircraft belonging to Nigerian domestic operator, Dana Air has overshot the runway at Port Harcourt International Airport.
The aircraft with number 9J0363, was flying from Abuja to Port Harcourt when it overshoot and entered the bush.
According to a statement from the airline’s Media / Communications Manager, Kingsley Ezenwa, the incident was as a result bad weather and torrential rain at the time of landing.
He said no casualty was recorded and all passengers and crew disembarked safely.
Ezenwa said: “One our aircraft (9j0363) operating the Abuja – Port Harcourt flight skidded off the runway at the Port Harcourt International Airport, as a result of the bad weather situation and torrential rain at the time of landing.
No casualty was recorded and all passengers and crew disembarked safely.
We commend the Pilot-in -command who was able to control the aircraft to a complete stop, before passengers and crew disembarked. We also wish to applaud the Captain for exhibiting the highest safety standards and handling the situation professionally. “
Also, confirming the incident, General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, (FAAN), Mrs Henrietta Yakubu in a statement said The incident was suspected to have been caused by a heavy rain, which was accompanied by strong wind and storm in Port Harcourt.
It will be recalled that the airline had a fatal accident in 2012 when one of its aircraft flying to Lagos from Abuja crashed into a two-storey building at Ishaga, at the outskirts of Lagos, killing all 153 passengers.
The aircraft, marked 5N-RAM, disappeared from the radar scope of the Lagos Air Traffic Control after communication from the tower to the pilot in command failed, before it crashed into the residential building on Tolulope Street, in Toyin area of Ishaga.
