Olaudah Equiano also known as Gustavus Vassa, was an African slave,  who later became an author, whose 1789 autobiography The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, was influential in ending the slave trade in Europe.

As a young boy in Nigeria, Equiano was captured with his sister. During his life as a slave, Equiano was sold three times before he purchased his own freedom.

As a young man in the new world, Equiano had bouts of depression and often suffered from suicidal thoughts.

We learn more about this great man in this video clip that is eloquently narrated by the late great Maya Angelou.
