Blackpool Zoo has welcomed the birth of three African lion cubs, marking the first lion births at the zoo in more than ten years and providing an important boost for its conservation and breeding programme.
According to BBC, African Lions are currently classified as vulnerable in the wild, with the population having declined significantly over recent decades owing to loss of habitat, Human-Wildlife Conflict, and a reduction in natural prey, according to zoo experts.
The cubs’ mother, Hira, “unusually” gave birth outside during the day on Sunday, meaning some areas of their habitat are currently off-limits to visitors in order to protect the welfare of the newborn cubs.
Section manager Adam Kenyon said staff at the zoo are “absolutely delighted” with the new arrivals.
The cubs’ father, Khari, was the last African Lion to be born at the zoo – in 2015 – and has remained “a firm favourite with both our team and our visitors” said Kenyon.
“So his journey to fatherhood makes this moment even more special.”
“We know visitors will be excited to meet the cubs,” he said, but added, “their welfare has to come first”.
“The partial closure is being reviewed on a daily basis, but even when the habitat is opened, visitors will be very lucky to see them – as Hira is keeping them safely tucked away in these early days of their life.”
