The unmistakable spirit of Carnival Calabar came alive at the 21st Akwaaba African Travel Market in Lagos, infusing the continent’s premier travel and tourism expo with a dazzling burst of colour, rhythm, and excitement.

Representing Cross River State, the Carnival Calabar contingent showcased the creativity and vibrancy that have earned the festival its title as “Africa’s Biggest Street Party.” Dancers in radiant costumes took over the exhibition floor with energetic performances, pulsating drums, and captivating cultural displays that drew admiration from delegates, exhibitors, and visitors alike.

The showcase celebrated the unique blend of culture, art, and tourism that defines Carnival Calabar, reaffirming its role as a key driver of both domestic and international tourism in Nigeria. Beyond entertainment, it underscored the carnival’s contribution to community empowerment, youth engagement, and the growth of Nigeria’s creative economy.

Looking ahead, the 2025 Carnival Calabar, themed “Traces of Time,” will take place from December 1st to 31st in Calabar, marking the 20th anniversary of the iconic event. The first Dry Run is scheduled for October 19, 2025, setting the stage for a month-long celebration of heritage, history, and artistic expression.

Adding cultural depth to the Akwaaba showcase was the Ekpe masquerade, a revered symbol in Efik tradition. Ekpe, which means Leopard in the Efik language, is a traditional institution whose members are respected custodians of culture, community order, and wealth distribution. Known for sponsoring communal feasts and festivities, the Ekpe society represents a deep sense of social responsibility and cultural pride. Over time, the tradition has transcended borders, spreading from Cross River and Akwa Ibom States to other parts of Africa and even to countries like Cameroon and Brazil.
