Anambra State is set to expand its aviation infrastructure with the construction of a second airport as part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s long-term economic development strategy aimed at transforming the state into a major aviation and industrial hub.

The State Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed the development during an online interview, saying the proposed airport forms a key component of the Aerotropolis City project under the Soludo administration’s Solution 2.0 agenda and the state’s Vision 2070 development blueprint.

According to Mefor, the Aerotropolis City is being developed as an aviation-driven industrial and commercial hub, making the construction of another airport essential to support its projected growth.

“There would be a second airport in Anambra. We are working on it already and in the next one to two years, flights will be received at the new airport and aviation activities will commence,” he said.

He explained that the new airport is expected to complement the existing Chinua Achebe International Airport in Umueri by providing additional capacity to support passenger traffic, cargo operations, investment and industrial activities associated with the Aerotropolis project.

The commissioner said the initiative aligns with the Soludo administration’s vision of positioning Anambra as a leading centre for commerce, technology, manufacturing and logistics in Africa.

Describing the long-term ambition of the project, Mefor said the government aims to transform Anambra into “the African Dubai-Taiwan,” leveraging modern infrastructure, industrial development and improved connectivity to attract both local and foreign investment.

While details regarding the exact location, project cost and financing structure of the proposed airport were not disclosed, Mefor indicated that construction is already underway and expressed confidence that the facility would begin receiving flights within the next one to two years.

If completed within the projected timeline, the airport would become Anambra’s second commercial aviation gateway and further strengthen the state’s position in Nigeria’s growing aviation landscape. The project is also expected to enhance regional connectivity, stimulate economic activity and support the development of the Aerotropolis City as a major aviation-linked economic zone.
