H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, has been named the Travel Personality of the Year, West Africa in recognition of his exceptional leadership and strategic contributions to the development of tourism across the West African sub-region during the 8th Accra Weizo conference in Accra, Ghana.
The honour reflects Dr. Touray’s tireless commitment to strengthening regional integration through tourism, championing key reforms that have had a lasting impact on travel, trade, and hospitality. Among his most lauded achievements is the implementation of hotel classification schemes across member states, which has raised hospitality standards and improved competitiveness in the region. His support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in tourism has also been instrumental in empowering local businesses and expanding job creation within the sector.

Dr. Touray has further distinguished himself through initiatives aimed at enhancing cross-border movement and streamlining border processes. His recent visit to the Seme-Krake border post was widely acknowledged as a practical demonstration of ECOWAS’ commitment to seamless regional travel an essential pillar for boosting intra-African tourism and economic integration.
Under his leadership, ECOWAS has continued to promote tourism as a tool for regional unity, economic growth, and cultural exchange, aligning with the broader goals of the bloc’s 50th anniversary celebrations. His vision supports the transformation of West Africa—home to over 400 million people into a thriving travel hub by reducing travel barriers, standardizing infrastructure, and fostering collaboration across borders.
Dr. Touray’s recognition as Travel Personality of the Year outlines the importance of high-level commitment in shaping a more connected and tourist-friendly West Africa.
