Africa’s tourism sector recorded strong growth in 2024, with Morocco emerging as the continent’s most visited destination, attracting an impressive 17.4 million tourists.
Accordin to a post by Africa Fact Zone on its official X account, the North African nation, known for its bustling souks, desert landscapes and historic cities, maintained a firm lead over regional competitors as global travel bounced back.
Egypt followed closely with 15.7 million visitors, driven by renewed interest in its ancient heritage sites and coastal resorts. Tunisia secured third place with 10.25 million arrivals, reflecting its steady recovery and growing appeal among European travellers.

Southern Africa also made a strong showing. South Africa welcomed 8.92 million tourists, boosted by its wildlife tourism and vibrant urban hubs, while neighbouring Zimbabwe drew 1.55 million visitors.
In West and East Africa, performance varied. Algeria attracted 3.5 million, while Kenya and Tanzania hosted 2.4 million and 2.14 million tourists respectively, underscoring the region’s status as a global safari hotspot. Uganda also recorded healthy numbers at 1.37 million arrivals.
Island destinations maintained their charm, with Mauritius receiving 1.38 million tourists and Cape Verde welcoming 1.2 million travellers. Ghana rounded out the list with 1.29 million visitors, reflecting its continued cultural tourism momentum.
The 2024 statistics highlight the diverse offerings across the continent — from beaches and wildlife to history and culture — and signal a promising trajectory for African travel as more countries invest in infrastructure, safety, and global marketing.
