The survey places Zimbabwe second poorest after the DRC in its survey of 184 countries.

HARARE – A global business magazine has ranked Zimbabwe the second poorest country in the world.

But the news has been greeted with surprise by some Zimbabweans.

The New York-based Global Finance Magazine places Zimbabwe second poorest after the Democratic Republic of Congo in its survey of 184 countries.

The survey, based on IMF data, says Zimbabweans’ average annual income between 2009 and 2013 was around US$589.

In comparison, the figure for South Africa was more than US$11,000 per year.

Zimbabweans on social media today are sceptical about the ranking though few dispute the severity of the economic crisis.
