Carnival Calabar

The 2026 edition of Africa’s biggest street party got its identity on Friday as the Cross River State Government unveiled “Rethinking Our Shared Destiny” as the official theme for Carnival Calabar and Festivals 2026.

The unveiling ceremony which is the 21st in it’s series, was held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, and brought together tourism stakeholders, government officials, and members of the diplomatic corps.

Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, who delivered the keynote address, said the 2026 theme was deliberately chosen to reflect the times and to position Carnival Calabar beyond entertainment.

According to him, “Rethinking Our Shared Destiny” is a call for collective responsibility, cultural pride, and sustainable development through tourism.

“This theme challenges us to look inward as a people and outward as a global community. Carnival Calabar has always been more than a parade of colours and music. It is a platform for unity, economic empowerment, and redefining Africa’s narrative,” the governor stated. He added that the 2026 festival will focus on inclusivity, innovation in tourism, and leveraging culture to create jobs and wealth for young people.

He said: ” In order to have a robust outing in this year’s Carnival Calabar and Festivals, we are galvanizing the efforts of Cross Riverians in the diaspora in terms of participation; propagation of the Carnival brand abroad as well as securing material support. A framework for the streaming of the carnival and the monetization of its contents have also been worked out.”

He added: ” In order to remain competitive in the tourism ecosystem the Creative Economy of Cross River State is currently undergoing a comprehensive overhaul, by creating more tourism assets which in turn will facilitate employment opportunities and generate revenue. These will immensely have a pull on repeat and new tourists to the State.”

The event had in attendance key players in Nigeria’s tourism and hospitality sector, alongside international dignitaries.

They included Ambassador Gautier Mignot, Head of the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Abuja, and Ambassador Paulo Santos of Portugal to Nigeria, Abuja. Both diplomats commended Cross River State for sustaining the festival for over two decades and pledged continued support for cultural diplomacy and tourism partnerships.

Ambassador Mignot described Carnival Calabar as “a remarkable example of how culture can drive integration and shared prosperity,” while Ambassador Santos noted that Portugal looks forward to deeper cultural exchanges through the festival.

Tourism stakeholders at the event praised the choice of theme, saying it aligns with global conversations on sustainability and shared growth in the post-pandemic era. They expressed optimism that “Rethinking Our Shared Destiny” will attract more international visitors and investors to Calabar in December 2026.

Carnival Calabar, tagged “Africa’s Biggest Street Party,” has grown since its inception in 2004 into a month-long festival of parades, music, fashion, and cultural exhibitions. With the 2026 theme now unveiled, preparations are expected to kick off in earnest as Cross River positions the event to deliver both entertainment value and socio-economic impact.
