2026 Carnival Calabar

The Cross River State Government has officially unveiled “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny” as the theme for the 2026 Carnival Calabar and Festivals, setting the stage for the 21st edition of Africa’s Biggest Street Party. Governor Sen. (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu announced the theme during a colourful ceremony held at the Eko Hotel and Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, attended by tourism stakeholders, diplomats, hospitality operators, carnival enthusiasts, and cultural promoters from across Nigeria and beyond.

In his address, Governor Otu described the unveiling as the formal commencement of activities leading to the 2026 Carnival Calabar, noting that the state was still relishing the success of the 20th anniversary edition, which featured 32 days of uninterrupted cultural displays, entertainment and artistic creativity. The governor expressed gratitude to sponsors, participating carnival bands, tourists, visitors and corporate organisations whose support contributed to the success of the landmark anniversary celebration.

“The pleasant memories of last year’s event remain etched in our hearts. We owe a debt of gratitude to our sponsors, carnival bands, tourists, visitors, and all those who believed in the Carnival Calabar brand,” he said. Governor Otu explained that the annual theme unveiling is more than a ceremonial tradition, describing it as a strategic platform for economic stimulation, cultural promotion, and tourism development.

According to him, the theme serves as a creative code that participating carnival bands interpret through costumes, choreography, props, and artistic expressions, while simultaneously opening opportunities for business growth, family reunions, and community engagement. “For us in Cross River State, the Carnival theme unveiling goes beyond symbolism. It opens a vista of opportunities for business expansion, especially within the informal sector, while fostering homecoming and family bonding,” the governor stated.

He revealed that the state government is actively engaging Cross Riverians in the diaspora to participate in and promote the carnival globally while helping to attract investment and sponsorship support. Governor Otu also disclosed that frameworks have been developed for digital streaming and monetisation of carnival content, enabling the event to reach wider global audiences and generate additional revenue streams. He noted that the state’s creative economy is currently undergoing significant reforms aimed at creating new tourism assets, expanding employment opportunities, and enhancing Cross River’s attractiveness as a leading tourism destination.

“To remain competitive in the tourism ecosystem, our creative economy is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul. We are creating more tourism assets that will facilitate employment opportunities and generate revenue while attracting both repeat and first-time visitors,” he said. The governor called on existing and prospective sponsors to continue supporting the carnival, assuring them of increased visibility and substantial returns on investment through association with one of Africa’s largest cultural festivals.

Chairman of the Carnival Calabar Commission, Sir Gabe Onah, announced a major innovation for the 2026 edition with the introduction of an online voting system designed to give communities and audiences greater participation in the carnival. According to him, the initiative will transform spectators into active stakeholders in the event while enhancing transparency and engagement. Sir Onah added that the carnival is being repositioned as a major economic platform capable of creating jobs and business opportunities for young people through the commercialisation of its products, content, and related activities. “The online voting system will allow people to participate actively rather than merely watch the carnival. We are also repositioning the event to create employment and entrepreneurial opportunities through the commercialisation of various carnival products,” he said.

The unveiling ceremony attracted prominent personalities from the tourism, culture and diplomatic communities. Among the international dignitaries present were Gautier Mignot, Head of the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, and Paulo Santos, who both praised Cross River State for sustaining the carnival for more than two decades. The diplomats commended the state government for using culture and tourism as tools for economic development and cultural diplomacy, while expressing support for future collaborations and partnerships.

Other notable attendees included Deputy Governor of Cross River State Rt. Hon. Peter Odey; Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly is Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem; Sen. Florence Ita-Giwa; former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke; former Minister of Tourism & Culture High Chief Edem Duke; Amb. Ikechi Uko, Int’l Consultant Carnival Calabar & organizer Akwaaba African Travel Market; former First Lady Cross River state Onari Duke.
