Kenya Airways has successfully completed its first heavy maintenance D-Check on one of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, marking a significant milestone for the airline’s engineering and maintenance division and reinforcing its ambition to become a leading Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) provider in Africa.
The airline announced the achievement in a post on its official X account, describing the completion of the D-Check as an important milestone for KQ Engineering & Maintenance.
According to the airline, the extensive maintenance exercise involved detailed inspections and work across virtually every part of the aircraft, requiring the combined expertise, technical skills and teamwork of its engineering personnel.
Kenya Airways said the successful completion of the check demonstrates the growing capabilities of its in-house engineering teams and reflects its continued investment in developing world-class MRO capacity on the African continent.
The airline noted that the achievement goes beyond returning the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to service, describing it as a demonstration of what its engineering workforce can accomplish through the development of specialised technical expertise.
The D-Check is among the most comprehensive forms of aircraft maintenance, involving extensive inspections and maintenance of an aircraft’s structure, systems and components.
For Kenya Airways, the successful completion of the Dreamliner D-Check represents an important step in its broader strategy to strengthen its engineering and maintenance capabilities and reduce reliance on external facilities for major maintenance work.
The airline said its investment in MRO capability is aimed at positioning KQ Engineering & Maintenance as a competitive provider of aircraft maintenance services, not only for Kenya Airways but for the wider African aviation market.
“Beyond the aircraft itself, this achievement is about what our people can do,” the airline said, highlighting the role of its engineering teams in delivering the milestone.
Kenya Airways added that the accomplishment brings it closer to its ambition of becoming the “MRO of Choice in Africa and Beyond,” potentially positioning the airline to capture a greater share of Africa’s growing aircraft maintenance market.
