Madagascar Airlines is set to return to its historic Air Madagascar name from October 31, 2026, as the national carrier moves to rebuild its domestic, regional and international operations.
The airline was established in 2021 following the restructuring of Air Madagascar and the integration of its domestic subsidiary, Tsaradia. According to Travel News, the return to the Air Madagascar brand forms part of the carrier’s wider efforts to restore its network and strengthen its operations.
As part of its regional recovery, the airline resumed the Antananarivo–Mahajanga–Moroni route on July 30, operating twice weekly with an ATR 72-500. The service reconnects Madagascar with Moroni in the Comoros while strengthening links between destinations within the region. Madagascar Airlines has also entered into a codeshare agreement with Ewa Air, a Mayotte-based subsidiary of Air Austral. Under the arrangement, Madagascar Airlines markets Ewa Air-operated flights under its MD code, providing connections between Mayotte and Antananarivo, Antsiranana, Mahajanga, Nosy Be and Moroni via Mayotte.
The carrier currently operates an ATR aircraft fleet and plans to lease at least one long-haul and one medium-haul aircraft to support the next phase of its expansion. The planned fleet additions are expected to provide additional capacity as the airline works to rebuild its international network. The return of the Air Madagascar name therefore goes beyond a branding change, coming as the airline seeks to strengthen connectivity between Madagascar, the Indian Ocean region and international markets.
