The remains of the wife of the former governor of old Anambra State, Christian Onoh, Chief Caroline Onoh, was yesterday buried at Ngwo in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. Speaking during the church service, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi described the late Onoh as a virtuous woman of exemplary character who inspired many with her selflessness, humility, simplicity and sincerity. Ugwuanyi spoke at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, during the requiem mass for Onoh which was attended by an array of dignitaries comprising the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano and his wife; the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu; the Governor of Ebonyi State who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Bernard Ugwu; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Geoffrey Onyeama and wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi.
Others include former governors of Anambra and Ebonyi states, Mr. Peter Obi and Chief Martin Elechi; Archbishop of Enugu Province (Anglican Communion), Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma; the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Dr. Callistus Onaga, among others. Ugwuanyi said the late Onoh was also a devout Christian, community leader and dedicated mother who rendered great service and made exceptional contributions to the development of the society. While offering the condolences of the government and people of the state, the entire South-East region and the nation at large,Ugwuanyi urged members of Onoh’s family, friends and well-wishers to take solace in the “worthy legacies and examples that she left behind”. He equally thanked the bishops and other members of the clergy,other governors of the South-East, members of the national and state assemblies, traditional rulers, Igbo leaders, and eminent personalities from different parts of the country and all those that participated and contributed towards the success of the funeral mass. In his sermon, a visiting priest and principal of College of Immaculate Conception (CIC), Enugu, Rev. Fr. Nnamdi Nwankwo, said the deceased embodied many Christian virtues which made her worthy of sainthood. He urged the Catholic bishop to consider initiating the process of canonisation as a fitting tribute for her “exemplary live”.
