Carnival Calabar Festival

The Cross River State Government has unveiled an extensive lineup of activities for Carnival Calabar 2026, setting the stage for months of cultural celebrations, fitness events, competitions, and entertainment under the theme “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny.”

The calendar, released by the organizers, outlines a series of events beginning in May and culminating in the grand carnival festivities in December. Widely regarded as Africa’s biggest street party, Carnival Calabar continues to serve as a major platform for tourism promotion, cultural preservation, and economic activity in Cross River State.

Activities will commence on May 31 with the unveiling of the carnival theme, followed by a series of Carnival Fitness Jam sessions scheduled throughout the year to promote health and community engagement.

The programme also includes an essay competition aimed at engaging young people, with forms set to be released on September 10, examinations scheduled for October 2, and prize presentations slated for October 16.

Stakeholder engagement remains a key component of the preparations, with a Stakeholders’ Conference on E-Voting planned for July 2026, as organizers explore innovative ways to improve participation and transparency in carnival-related activities.

Several cultural and regional events have also been incorporated into the calendar, including the Igbo Amaka Festival on November 15 and the Ikom-Ogoja Carnival scheduled for November. These events are expected to showcase the rich cultural diversity of Cross River State and attract visitors from across Nigeria and beyond.

Preparations for the main carnival will intensify with a series of dry runs, beginning with the first dry run on October 18, followed by a second on November 22, a final dry run on December 6, and a junior dry run on December 13.

The festive season will reach its peak in late December with a lineup of signature events, including the Cultural Carnival and Night of Kings and Queens on December 26, the Junior Carnival on December 27, the Parade of the Bands on December 28, the Bikers Carnival on December 29, and the highly anticipated Street Party/Colour Runs on December 30.

Organizers say the 2026 edition will build on the carnival’s reputation as one of Africa’s premier tourism and entertainment events, bringing together culture, creativity, music, fashion, and community participation while reinforcing Cross River State’s position as a leading tourism destination.

With months of activities planned and expectations already building, Carnival Calabar 2026 is poised to once again draw thousands of visitors, performers, and tourism stakeholders to the state for what promises to be a vibrant celebration of culture and collective identity.
