Ghana’s Casinos

Ghana’s casino industry is emerging as a vibrant contributor to the country’s tourism growth, blending gaming entertainment with the nation’s rich cultural heritage.

According to focusgn.com, casinos are no longer just gambling venues; they are becoming dynamic cultural spaces that fuse leisure, music and local identity. Casinos in the popular cities of Accra, Kumasi and Tema are increasingly positioning themselves as cultural entertainment destinations. In addition to traditional gambling options like poker and slot machines, these venues feature live Afrobeat music performances, local cuisine and exhibitions of Ghanaian art.

The combination attracts both gambling patrons and visitors seeking a broader cultural experience, making these venues tourist hotspots. In 2024, Ghana earned $4.8bn in tourism revenue with 1.3 million international visitors, a 12 per cent increase from the previous year. While festivals and heritage sites remain major draws, casinos are quietly gaining traction as part of this growth. The country’s gambling landscape includes 24 land-based casinos, 12 licensed online platforms and 25 sports betting operators regulated by the Gaming Commission. Gambling revenue is expected to rise from $51m to $74m by 2029.

The Department of Tourism affirmed Ghana’s strategic openness to growth in this sector. “Ghana is open for foreign direct investment in tourism and always ready for investments that align with our tourism vision and national development agenda,” the Tourism Department said in a statement. Interest from Africa’s tourism players is growing. South Africa’s Integrated Tourism Group, Tourvest, has held discussions with local officials about sustainable tourism projects. A new five-day visa policy introduced in 2025 is also helping ease access for both tourists and investors. As Ghana’s tourism offering expands, casinos are carving out a distinct niche that merges entertainment with local flavour in West Africa’s competitive travel scene.
