Kenya Airways is set to expand its fleet with the planned lease of at least four Boeing aircraft as the national carrier moves to increase passenger capacity, strengthen operational resilience and grow its cargo business.

According to kenyans.co.ke, the airline’s Group Acting Chief Executive Officer, George Kamal, announced the plan on August 19, 2026, saying Kenya Airways intends to lease a Boeing 777-300ER, two Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft and two widebody freighters—a Boeing 767 and Boeing 777—as part of its fleet expansion strategy.

The two Boeing 737-800s are expected to be acquired before the end of 2026 and will provide additional capacity on short- and medium-haul routes. Depending on their configuration, the aircraft can accommodate between 162 and 189 passengers. The Boeing 777-300ER, meanwhile, is expected to provide additional widebody capacity for high-demand routes and serve as operational cover when another aircraft is undergoing scheduled maintenance or is unexpectedly grounded. Kenya Airways has already deployed its existing 777-300ER on the Nairobi-London route when demand warrants additional capacity.

The fleet expansion comes as the airline seeks to address aircraft availability constraints and rising passenger demand. Kamal said delays in acquiring new aircraft had contributed to the decision to pursue leasing arrangements as a faster way of increasing capacity. Alongside passenger growth, Kenya Airways is placing significant emphasis on expanding its cargo operations. The carrier plans to introduce two widebody freighters, a Boeing 767 and Boeing 777, with the aircraft expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2027. The additional freighters are intended to significantly increase Kenya Airways’ cargo-handling capability and strengthen its position in the regional air freight market.

Kenya Airways currently handles approximately 70 tonnes of cargo per day and aims to increase its share of cargo moving through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) from about 11 per cent to as much as 40 per cent. The expansion reflects growing demand for air cargo across East Africa, particularly for time-sensitive agricultural exports, manufactured products and other high-value goods. The airline is also working to improve fleet availability by returning grounded aircraft to operation. Six aircraft were reported to be grounded, with two undergoing maintenance and four awaiting engine components expected in September.

Despite these challenges, Kenya Airways has increased the number of aircraft in operation from 19 in mid-2025 to 26 currently, demonstrating an ongoing effort to restore and strengthen its operating capacity. The fleet expansion and recovery programme are expected to improve schedule reliability, increase available seats and give the airline greater flexibility in responding to seasonal and route-specific demand.

For Kenya Airways, the strategy represents a dual focus on passenger network expansion and cargo growth, with additional Boeing aircraft expected to strengthen Nairobi’s position as a major aviation and logistics hub in East Africa.
