Singapore welcomed 9.8 million international visitors in the first seven months of 2026, although arrivals declined by 1.9 per cent year-on-year as weaker visitor numbers from some of its major source markets offset growth from China.

According to VnExpress, the city-state recorded 1.63 million international arrivals in July, its strongest monthly performance so far this year. However, July arrivals were still 2.9 per cent lower than the corresponding period in 2025, highlighting the uneven pace of recovery in one of Asia’s leading tourism destinations.

China remained Singapore’s largest source market during the period, accounting for 1.96 million visitors, an increase of 3.7 per cent compared with a year earlier. Growth from China helped cushion declines from other major markets, particularly Indonesia and India. Indonesia, Singapore’s second-largest source market, recorded 1.34 million visitors, representing a 10.9 per cent decline year-on-year. Arrivals from India also fell by 5.5 per cent to approximately 692,000, contributing to the overall decline in international tourism numbers.

Despite the slowdown, Singapore is maintaining an ambitious tourism outlook. The government is targeting between 17 million and 18 million international visitors in 2026, supported by increased public investment in the tourism sector and initiatives designed to encourage longer stays. Authorities are also seeking to spread tourism spending beyond Singapore’s traditional city-centre attractions. A campaign running from August to October is offering tourists using Grab’s Singapore Grab Travel Pass two ride vouchers, including discounts on journeys to destinations such as Katong-Joo Chiat, Tiong Bahru, Mandai and Sentosa.

The strategy reflects Singapore’s broader effort to increase visitor engagement and encourage tourists to explore more neighbourhoods and attractions across the island rather than concentrating their activities around the central business and tourism districts. Singapore’s tourism performance is particularly significant given its status as a major global business and leisure hub. Its sophisticated infrastructure, international connectivity, attractions and strong hospitality ecosystem continue to make it a major destination in Southeast Asia.

The latest figures, however, underline the increasingly competitive nature of international tourism. While overall visitor numbers remain substantial, changing travel patterns in key Asian markets mean Singapore must continue investing in destination marketing, experiences and visitor infrastructure to sustain growth. With nearly 10 million international arrivals already recorded in seven months, the country remains on a strong trajectory toward its annual target, even as fluctuations in major source markets present challenges for the remainder of 2026.
