Kenya Railways has completed the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service project, a major boost to urban transport that promises easier and faster travel within the coastal city.

According to the-star.co.ke, the project involved the construction of modern passenger stations in Mombasa town and Miritini, the building of a 2.3-kilometre railway bridge across the ocean at Makupa, and the rehabilitation of 16.6 kilometres of existing Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) line.

Two additional stations are planned for construction in Changamwe West and Changamwe East. Speaking during an inspection tour of the newly completed infrastructure, Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar confirmed that operations will begin soon.

He also noted that Kenya Railways has conducted successful test rides to ensure safety and operational readiness.

“I am pleased to inform you that the project is now complete and ready for operations. Our goal is to reduce commuting time, ease road congestion, cut carbon emissions, and provide safe, reliable, and affordable transport for all,” said PS Daghar.

The Mombasa Commuter Rail Service is designed to enhance last-mile connectivity for passengers using the Madaraka Express Passenger Service, while also serving local commuters along the corridor.

The service features “Park and Ride” and “Drop and Ride” options, with parking capacity for over 100 vehicles and a daily ridership target of more than 1,000 commuters.

Kenya Railways board chairman Abdi Bare highlighted that the Link train schedule has been synchronised with the Madaraka Express timetable to ensure seamless connectivity.

“Every time the Madaraka Express arrives, the Link train will be on standby to provide last-mile transport into Mombasa town,” Bare said.

“Likewise, the Link train will transport passengers from Mombasa to the Miritini station to board the Express.”

This development represents a major milestone in the integration of rail services in Mombasa.

It also underscores Kenya Railways’ commitment to closing logistical gaps, enhancing passenger convenience, and reducing pressure on urban road networks.
