Kenya unveils regional highway project

Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced plans for a major regional highway corridor linking Kenya, Tanzania, and South Sudan. The project is aimed at improving regional integration and making the movement of people and goods across East Africa easier.

According to kenyans.co.ke, speaking during a Community Empowerment Initiative at Kamwosor Grounds in Elgeyo Marakwet County on Saturday, May 2, Murkomen said the project is advancing steadily, with key preparatory milestones already achieved.

He disclosed that the design phase of the proposed transnational highway has been completed, noting that the government is now focusing on implementation frameworks and funding modalities ahead of construction.

According to the CS, the highway will originate from Ainamoi in Kericho County, pass through Mbogo Valley, Lessos, Kondoo, and Kamosor in the North Rift, and form a critical transport spine for the region.

From there, the route will extend into Elgeyo Marakwet, passing through Kapkitony, El Nino, Kalwal, Flouspar, and Emsea in Keiyo South Constituency and continue through Biretwo, Aror, Tot, and Chesegon along the Chesombur-Kepase-Marich Pass corridor.

Murkomen further explained that the highway will then proceed to Lodwar and onwards to Nadapal, the border town between Kenya’s Turkana County and South Sudan’s Kapoeta East County, before finally connecting to Juba in South Sudan.

“That road from Ainamoi to Juba is one major highway that this government will construct, and we have already done the design. We will have another branch of the Highway passing through this place and will be key to linking major agricultural areas,” Murkomen announced.

He added that the corridor is designed not only for trade and logistics but also to open up both agricultural and pastoral regions that have historically been underserved by major infrastructure projects.

On the southern branch, the highway will extend from Kericho through Emurua Dikirr in Narok County and traverse deeper into Narok, strengthening internal connectivity within the region.

From Narok, the route will continue to Kuria in Migori County before reaching Isebania, the border town between Kenya and Tanzania, effectively linking the Kenyan network into Tanzania’s transport system.

After connecting with Tanzania, the corridor will form a continuous highway system stretching from Tanzania through Kenya and onwards to South Sudan, creating one of the most extensive regional road linkages in East Africa.

“This will be one of the new corridors of the Kenyan highway, that is all part of the Singapore dream under the BETA agenda of the President,” Murkomen said.

The announcement comes as the government also prepares to roll out other major infrastructure projects, including the Mau Summit-Malaba expressway extension, with President William Ruto indicating that tenders will be issued before the end of the year to complement ongoing road upgrades aimed at boosting trade, creating jobs, and transforming regional connectivity.
