Hotels and lodges across Kenya’s top tourism circuits are fully booked this peak season, with the Masai Mara National Reserve leading the surge as thousands of tourists flock to witness the annual Wildebeest Migration, the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife has confirmed.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Hon. Rebecca Miano toured the Mara this afternoon as part of the Ministry’s nationwide hospitality sector monitoring program. The inspection follows similar checks conducted last week along the Coastal circuit and in Central Kenya.
“Maximum Capacity” Across Key Destinations
Speaking after the tour, CS Miano said occupancy rates remain at maximum capacity across all major destinations.
“Following our recent checks along the Coastal circuit last week and Central Kenya, I am delighted to confirm that hotel and lodge occupancy across all these key destinations remains at maximum capacity,” Miano stated.
During her visit to the Mara, the CS assessed facility readiness and service delivery to ensure both domestic and international guests receive top-tier hospitality during the high season.
Conservation Enforcement Along Mara River
With visitor numbers at their highest, the Ministry says it is tightening enforcement around the Mara River, one of the migration’s most critical and congested points.
“We are actively enforcing responsible viewing and conservation standards around high-density migration areas along the Mara River to protect our wildlife corridors,” Miano noted.
The Wildebeest Migration, often called the “Greatest Show on Earth,” sees more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles cross from the Serengeti into the Masai Mara between July and October.
Kenya Reaffirms Global Standing
Miano said the strong bookings reaffirm Kenya’s reputation as a premier global travel destination.
“The robust occupancy rates we are witnessing across the Coast, Central, Mara and indeed across all the circuits reaffirm Kenya’s position as a premier global travel destination, and our commitment remains firm in maintaining world-class standards while safeguarding the pristine ecosystems that make Magical Kenya extraordinary,” she said.
The CS urged Kenyans and visitors to explore more of the country’s offerings beyond the migration.
“Let’s take time to explore our parks, game reserves, and community conservancies. Let’s continue to support local businesses, celebrate our heritage, and protect our environment for generations to come,” she added.
